Should I talk it over with my family and friends before proposing?
It is your decision. You are the one who will be married to her. In general it is not a bad idea to get advice of family and friends whom you respect before making a huge decision. However, with regard to proposing, I would opt to ask them general questions about you getting married at this time in your life. Also, I would ask them how they feel about the relationship you have with your girlfriend. Allow them to give you their insight without having to take a side or a stance. I would refrain from asking other people "should I marry her?"
